Ipl Top 5 Controversies and Scandals in Last Decade

In this session, we present to you some of the darkest controversies and Scandals to have plagued the league and tarnished the reputation of cricket in India.

1) IPL Spot-Fixing Scandal (2013)

   In Ipl history, the biggest and the worst Indian Premier scandal broke out in 2013 and it changed the face of Indian cricket forever.The case started with the arrest of bookies in Delhi and Ahmedabad but exploded in dramatic fashion when they caught Vindoo Dara Singh. The story gained depth very quickly with police establishing the involvement of Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra, who were principal owners of the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, respectively. The Delhi police also arrested three cricketers, S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan – all of whom were part of the Rajasthan Royals and found to have established connections with the bookies.
   Justice Mukul Mudgal panel was formed by the Supreme Court for investigating the whole matter and the panel submitted its report to the Justice Lodha Panel in 2014. In July 2015, the Lodha Panel gave a landmark verdict by suspending both Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals from the IPL for two years.
2) Slapgate - Harbhajan Singh & S Sreesanth (2008) 

   After registering a 66 runs victory over Mumbai Indians in a group stage match in Mohali, Punjab star Sreesanth said something to Harbhajan, which the India spinner found offensive and the latter allegedly slapped him. This visuals of then Kings XI Punjab pacer S Sreesanth crying his heart out inside the stadium was played several times on all the news channels during the first edition of the league in 2008.
   However, later Harbhajan went to Sreesanth's dressing room and it was reported that he went inside to apologise to the pacer and had a long chat with him. In 2013, the controversy was raked up again, courtesy of Sreesanth suggesting that the whole incident had been planned and asserted that the actual footage of the incident was with the IPL authorities but being suppressed. 
3) IPL Czar Lalit Modi - Dismissal (2010)

   All cricket fan know that the Ipl T-20 cricket was brain-child of Lalit Modi and he is the man  credited with fuelling the growth of the T20 format in the country saw his fortunes nosedive in the summer of 2010. In a dramatic move, just minutes before the presentation for IPL 3, Modi was dismissed by the BCCI for massive financial irregularities.
   The BCCI sent out an official mail about Lalit Modi's sacking after he had just finished reading out the closing speech of the 2010 IPL on the night of the final. He was accused of financial impropriety, rigging bidding deals, offering bribes, betting and money laundering. BCCI president Shashank Manohar was quoted as saying after Modi was sacked "While we rejoice and celebrate the great success of the IPL season, the alleged acts of individual misdemeanours of Mr Lalit K Modi have brought a bad name to the administration of cricket and the game itself".
   Since then, Lalit Modi still maintains that he was not part of any wrongdoings​ and Modi has been living in self-imposed exile in the United Kingdom on grounds of his security being under threat in India.
4) The Luke Pomersbach Scandal (2012)

   Australia's 27 year old Luke Pomersbach was arrested by the Delhi police for allegedly molesting an American Indian woman. Luke charged under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code. It was alleged by the lady in question that Pomersbach had followed her into the bedroom and indulged in some unscrupulous behaviour. 
   However, the case was settled by both parties outside the court and the charges against Pomersbach were subsequently dropped.
5) Shah Rukh Khan 5 Year banned in Wankhede Stadium (2012)
   In 2012 after KKR had won the match against the Mumbai Indians, the star’s children and their friends were indulging in some fun and games on the playing surface. KKR's co-owner and Bollywood king-Khan Shah Rukh Khan was involved in an ego fuelled altercation with a security guard at the Wankhede Stadium in the summer of 2012. 
   When the security guard attempted to get them off the ground, an incensed Shah Rukh indulged in a nasty brawl that gained national attention. The Mid-Day published an alleged transcript from the interaction and television channels had a field day playing up the controversy over the next few days. The Mumbai Cricket Association subsequently held an investigation into the incident and banned the actor from entering the stadium for next five years after it.
